Spring is officially here, and we hope you are enjoying some warm weather! Cristin and Beth had an early taste of spring at the Florida retreat in Orlando—more on that below! First, a little spring cleaning detail: Word Lab is closed in April, due to a combination of spring holidays and our next retreat happening in Texas at the end of the month. We’ll resume Word Lab in May and hope to see you there.
New Online Workshops: Just $5!
But we’re not leaving you with nothing! Last year, Beth launched her Patreon as a way to both published her serialized novels without Amazon and as a way to provide additional content for aspiring writers. The serialized nature of the novel, as well as the interactive quality of showing readers where ideas came from and how they’re developed, lended itself to some pretty specific writing instructional posts.
As the year went on, Beth decided to start making video content as well, combining a thirty-minute long lesson with a worksheet on targetted areas based on comments of what people felt like they needed.
Now Beth is making that content available—but only to her patrons and her Wordsmith people!
You can subscribe to Beth’s Patreon for just $5 a month at the writing level, which will gain you access to all the archives, including every video workshop so far, with a new one being added every month. (Beth’s a little obsessive about adding more content—there’s a writing post, group critique, or workshop every week.)
However, if you’d just like to hone in on one workshop without subscribing, you can now purchase each individual video a la carte through Wordsmith. Each workshop is about 30 minutes long and comes with a worksheet that you can download for yourself and go at your own pace.
There are currently three different workshops availble:
Story Structure
Character Building: When to show vs. when to tell
Query Letter basics
More will be added each month. Check them all out here!

…because we’re back to booking retreats! Last month, we had our Orlando retreat with a bunch of new people (hi, new friends!), and this month we’re hosting a retreat outside of Austin that’s focused on fast drafting.
Next month, we’re going to be announcing our fall retreats—one that’s focused on writing and one that’s focused on revising. We absolutely anticipate these selling out, so please be sure to check on it in next month’s newsletter if you’re interested!
